A free alternative to Lose It!.

Lose It! is the app people recommend when they leave MyFitnessPal: clean, quick, and the barcode scanner is still free. In 2026 its Premium price doubled to $79.99 a year, and Snap It, the photo feature, gives free users a few tries before asking for it. Food Tracker does the photo, the voice note and the text for free, through the ChatGPT or Claude account you already have.

Why people look for a Lose It alternative

For years Lose It! was the sensible free choice: the scanner stayed free when MyFitnessPal's did not, and Premium was $39.99. In 2026 Premium went to $79.99 a year, the same as MyFitnessPal, and the Lifetime price went to $299.99. The free tier still logs calories and scans barcodes, but macro goals, most nutrient detail and more than a taste of Snap It are behind the paywall, with ads in front of it.

Lose It! is still a good app. The question is whether logging by search is the thing you want to pay for.

What is different about Food Tracker

You never open a search box. A photo of the plate, a voice note or a sentence goes to ChatGPT or Claude, which itemises the meal, estimates portions, works out calories, macros and seventeen micronutrients, shows you the list and logs it on your yes. Macro and micronutrient targets are free, per day and per meal.

The app only shows you the numbers: no AI runs inside it, so it costs nothing. The free versions of ChatGPT and Claude are enough.

Where Lose It! is still better

  • Scanning packaged food: a free barcode scanner with exact label data.
  • A fast, polished logging interface and a big verified US database.
  • Syncing with Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Health and Google Fit.
  • Meal patterns, challenges and a community.

Switch to Food Tracker if

  • Most of your meals are cooked, not packaged.
  • You wanted macro targets without paying $79.99 a year.
  • You would rather talk than type.
  • You eat Indian or other non-Western food that the database does not cover.
